General Information
Fencing is a great sport that teaches discipline because you must learn to
control the intricacies of your movements.  Fencing has often been referred to
as physical chess because of the high mental discipline that it requires.  It is a
great alternative sport to those that may not feel like they fit in with the
mainstream sports.  In his over 20 years of teaching fencing Dan has found a
great many students who did not feel comfortable with the mainstream sports,
but have excelled in fencing because size and speed do not matter.  Dan has
found through his experience teaching, that fencing is a great builder of
self-esteem, confidence, and mental discipline.

The number one reason we hear for apprehension about fencing programs is
safety, as there are swords involved.  There is a commonly-held  fact in the
fencing community that more people have been injured in ping pong
tournaments than in fencing.  The masks are 8 gauge steel that must go
through rigorous safety testing.  The jackets are 3 layers of thick, canvas-type
material.  The foils (weapons) are tempered steel designed to bend on
impact.  The safety standards for fencing are set by the USFA and the FIE (a
French acronym; it stands for the International Association of Fencing).

In 20 years of teaching, Dan has never had a student hurt while fencing, except
for pulled muscles and the like.  Fencing is a safe sport if taught correctly.  As
well, Dan carries $1 million liability insurance coverage through a plan
sponsored by the USFA.

For fencing demos, to get classes started or to get training to teach your
students fencing, please contact us.  To see if your students would be
interested, we would be happy to do a one hour, one-time fencing.  We are
motivated to get programs started, so please let us know what we need to do
to get this started in the schools.

We are available to teach after school programs, homeschool programs,
evening programs, summer camps, one-time two hour mini camps, and
others.  For ages 4-7 we teach Little Tikes nerf fencing.  For ages 8 (or 4th
grade) and up we offer the following classes:  beginning,  intermediate, and
advanced foil, saber and epee, stage combat, and historical fencing.  (Most of
them have a prerequisite to take foil first.)

We currently have successful after school programs at four schools in the
Fairfax County Public School System, two elementary (Fort Hunt and
Waynewood) and two middle schools (Poe and Carl Sandburg).  For grades
first through third we use nerf foam sabers and for grades four and up, we use
foils.
